With over 30 years of experience in the mental-health field, Dr. Hoedeman has been the executive director of the Pittsburgh Pastoral Institute (PPI) since 2003. He is also an adjunct faculty member in the Master of Arts in Counseling program at Waynesburg University. His previous positions include: PPI clinical director (1994-2002); adjunct faculty for the postgraduate Marriage and Family Therapy Program at the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work (1996-2001); branch office director (1987-1989), training director (1989-1991), and clinical director (1992-1994) at the Personal Counseling Service in Clarksville, IN; and adjunct faculty for the AAMFT- approved Marriage and Family Therapy Program at the Louisville Presbyterian Seminary (1990-1993).

He is also trained as a Family and Divorce Mediator and has served as the past president of the Pittsburgh Association for Psychoanalytic Thought, which cosponsors two of his popular continuing-education seminars for mental-health professionals: “Existential and Psychodynamic Dimensions of the Psychology of Religion: Or to the Stars on the Wings of a Pig”; and Therapeutic Dimensions of the Psychology of Religion.”
